One of the greatest applications on the iPhone (3GS) is Star Walk:
Once you open it, you'll get data about the sun, the current moon phase and 4 main planets.
You can point your iPhone toward any direction and you will get how the sky looks like from your location (isn't that cool?)
Click on any star you're interested in and check out some basic info about it ...
You can also go back in time to check the different stars ... :)

There's a similar program on my Android phone, "Google Sky Map" but it only shows the constellations.
I have puniverse on iPhone. This one seems better though
